Since the launch in 2022, the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) Driver License Services has offered electronic filing of SR-22 and SR-26 forms through Tyler Insurance Filings. The electronic process allows insurance providers to submit filings quickly, efficiently, and securely.

In Maine, drivers required to carry an SR-22 must maintain the filings for 36 months to retain their driving privileges. If the SR-22 is canceled during this period, the driver's license may be suspended until a new SR-22 is filed.

By taking advantage of electronic filing, insurance providers benefit from priority processing, real-time status updates, online reporting tools, and the ability to send notes directly to the state.

"Electronic filing has significantly improved the way we process SR-22 and SR-26 forms," said Christopher Ireland, Director of Driver License Services at the Maine BMV. "We want to make sure all insurers know about this service, as it reduces delays and accelerates reinstatement of a Maine license."

Insurance providers can submit filings using the Tyler Insurance Filings web portal, either through a single-entry submission or via API web services for seamless automation. The API option allows insurers to submit data directly from their policy management system, minimizing manual entry and reducing processing times.

With expedited response times and instant status notifications, insurers can now manage filings more effectively than ever before.

Additionally, the online system is secure and compliant with industry standards, ensuring that sensitive driver and insurance information remains protected.

It is important to note that the state of Maine no longer requires notification of vehicle changes on an SR-22 policy and does not track vehicle modifications within an active policy. This means insurers are not required to report vehicle additions, removals, or replacements. In addition, the certification date does not need to match the insurance policy effective date but cannot precede this date on the electronic SR-22 submission. For out-of-state drivers who require an SR-22 with the Maine BMV, a customer number is not assigned, and the filer should include the out-of-state driver license number in the filing.

If an SR-22 policy is canceled or terminated, insurance providers must submit an SR-26 cancelation notice at least 30 days in advance. This ensures the BMV has adequate time to process changes and notify the driver of their compliance status.

"Our goal is to make compliance as straightforward as possible for both insurers and drivers," said Chris. "By expanding awareness of electronic filing, we are helping to reduce administrative burdens and improve service efficiency across the board."

Electronic SR-22 and SR-26 filing is also available for Iowa and Washington, and cloud fax submissions using the same electronic submission process are supported for Kansas, North Dakota, Ohio, Vermont, and Virginia. Read more about recent enhancements to our cloud fax filing services.
