Use precise motor carrier data to optimize outcomes for California filings

Registered company name information is critical to successful automated filing reviews

Published: October 14, 2026

Tyler Insurance Filings is proud to offer turnaround times of approximately one business day for MCP 65 and MCP 66 form filings through an automated review process managed in collaboration with the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

This system validates filings by matching the provided motor carrier information with DMV permit records, which means data accuracy directly contributes to acceptance or rejection of key insurance documentation.

If a filing contains name information that does not match the DMV permit, then the insurance form will be rejected and discarded. Insurers will need to refile to confirm coverage and facilitate motor carrier compliance with DMV requirements.

Learn more below about rules for name data, and what you can do to improve your filing acceptance rates.

Motor Carrier Permits and the Application Process

The California DMV Motor Carrier Permit (MCP) database is the source used for verifying insurance documentation data, including a company’s name and state ID number, known as a CA number.

Motor carriers must submit an application to the DMV to obtain an MCP.

MCP data may not match information recorded by the California Highway Patrol for the CA number.

  • Success Tip: Make sure the motor carrier submits an MCP application before filing an MCP 65.

Name Resources

After the motor carrier receives a permit, their information is added to the California DMV Active Motor Carrier listing. Look up active motor carriers online and use the displayed name in your MCP 65 and MCP 66 filings.

  • Success Tip: If the company does not appear on the active motor carrier list, check with the motor carrier to determine the name format that appears on their permit.

Name Entry Guidance

After you have confirmed the name registered on the Motor Carrier Permit, you are ready to file!

Tyler Insurance Filings will help guide you through the process of entering a company name or individual name:

Success Tips:

  • Enter complete company names as they appear on the Motor Carrier Permit, including suffixes like “Inc” or “LLC”.
  • For sole proprietors registered in an individual person’s name, pay close attention to whether the middle name is listed on the permit in full, or as an initial. Enter full names in the first or last name field. Enter a middle initial in the middle name field.

Resubmission for Name Corrections

If a filing is rejected due to an incorrect company name, you will receive a rejection notice by email containing the correct name information. Names are listed in the following order: Last Name, First Name, Middle Name.

  • Success Tip: Copy this information exactly when you resubmit the filing. You can copy and paste the name from the rejection notice directly into the Company Name field, even for sole proprietors.
