Improve Your California Acceptance Rates by Using These Tips

Published: August 23, 2021

This summer, the California Motor Carrier Permit (MCP) division and the NIC Insurance Filings team collaborated to automate the state agency's review process for filings submitted through NIC Insurance Filings.

When a filing hits all the marks, it gets auto-approved in as soon as one business day. Filings that are not auto-approved are rejected or set to pending for further review.

To take full advantage of the automated process, below are a few points to consider about your California filings:

  • Use the new legal name type options to submit company names in the correct format. The automated review system handles motor carrier legal names differently depending on whether the company is registered with California using a company name or a person's name. Confirm the registration details for the motor carrier before filing, and the form will guide you through proper data entry.

  • Leave out spaces and hyphens for multiple last names. If a motor carrier is registered under multiple last names, don't include any spaces between names. For example, if the motor carrier is registered under Ellen Jones Lane, enter the Legal Name as "Ellen JonesLane" in NIC Insurance Filings:

  • Don't worry if your filing is assigned a "Pending" status. The automated system uses the Pending status to identify filings that require additional review. Filings are marked Pending when:

    1. The motor carrier has not applied for authority to operate with the California DMV,
    2. There's a data entry error, including typos or prefixes like "CA#," or
    3. US DOT or MC numbers are entered instead of state CA numbers.

Don't assume that Pending filings will be rejected - just wait a little longer for a decision. You'll receive an email update with the final outcome.
